Introducing: Adalita - the Aussie PJ Harvey?

Continuing the slow assimilation of Australian content (I'm headed there soon for the guts of a year) - here's Adalita, who in short, appears to be the Aussie version of PJ Harvey. It's a lazy comparison no doubt but with a formula of powerful melancholic inflections and sparse linear riffs - the similarity is undeniable. 'The Repairer', her debut single, may not be quite as affecting as Harvey's incredible recent effort (Let England Shake is undoubtedly album of the year territory) but it's a strong, haunting introduction to the former Magic Dirt front-woman and you can consider my interest in this lady piqued.

'The Repairer' is released on September 5th, with Adalita's self-titled debut album to follow in 2012.

Video: Gotye - 'Somebody That I Used To Know (feat. Kimbra)'

Nialler9 posted this interesting little track from Australian musician Gotye this morning and I've been hitting the repeat button ever since. The vocals are beautiful throughout, with that pin-pricked, gentle build up leading to a powerful chorus and finale. The video is another stop-motion affair, full of naked body parts and nifty results, while the female vocals belong to Kimbra.

I'm leaving these shores for Australia soon myself so expect some more musical treats from the 'land down-under' very soon and as ever - recommendations are welcome.

Good Tunes Roundup: Summer Camp, Austra and Milagres

Trying to keep up with all the tip-top tunes that emerge daily is a tricky task. It's only inevitable some slip through the cracks so here's a little golden trio of songs that have been pleasing my ears as of late...

From a band whose name conjures up images of friends singing Kumbaya and toasting marshmallows around a fire, Summer Camp's - 'I Want You' is a surprisingly dark and aggressive venture into the excesses of love and lust, by way of throbbing synths and disconcerting lyrics.

Austra were huge at this year's SXSW so I'm a little late to the game here but Jesus, what a voice. Drawing strong comparisons to Kate Bush, it's an ethereal, soaring presence that transforms a simplistic, brooding track into an operatic anthem.  Signed to Domino, their debut album Feel it Break is out May 16th.

Milagres' - ' Glowing Mouth' is a slow-paced, slow-burning but mighty fine indie jaunt all the way from Brooklyn...and it's a free download too, ker-ching! 

  

Introducing - The Middle East

Songs of esteemed beauty from The Middle East, an Australian band who, with any luck, will follow the example set last year by Fleet Foxes and their meteoric rise from the blogosphere to commercial acclaim.

Like their American counter-parts, The Middle East produce a soothing, symphonic sound of delicate guitar licks and cascading vocals, yet the songs are dressed with enough joy to avoid the potential 'heard-it-all-before' scenario. Simultaneously uplifting and heart-wrenching, The Middle East are a band to fall in love with, holding more emotional and reflective potency in one song than the majority of bands produce in their life time.
